Through mutual respect, compassion, integrity and trust, the dedicated staff and trained volunteers at Fitted for Work help women gain the self-esteem and confidence to achieve their goal of sustainable employment.  Their most recent Melbourne survey revealed that 75% of the women they’ve dressed were employed within three months of their visit to Fitted for Work.

Karyn’s story

This is a story about a woman – a mother and a grandmother. Meet Karyn, aged 55.

If you were to meet Karyn today you would see a confident, vivacious woman who loves her job and who is looking forward to her future.  However, things weren’t always so good for Karyn.  She was trapped in an abusive relationship for many years.  One day, she found the courage to leave and fled with her youngest daughter to a women’s shelter.  By this time, Karyn had lost her self-confidence and felt very uncertain about her future.

“I hadn’t worked for many years and was worried no-one would want to employ a woman my age.”

One thing Karyn was sure of was that she needed to find work to support her family. Karyn saw her ‘ideal job’ advertised online, but knew she needed help if she was going to get it.  The workplace is not kind to older workers, women returning to work, or women who have been unemployed for a long time.  It takes courage to put yourself forward for interviews when the odds are stacked against you. With guidance and mentoring from staff and volunteers at Fitted for Work, Karyn improved her presentation skills and regained her self-esteem and confidence.

“I was dressed by Fitted for Work in a great outfit.  I left the boutique with a real boost of self-esteem and confidence. The interviewers said I was the best presented of all the candidates.  I got the job and started work on the Spirit of Tasmania almost immediately. For me it is the job of my dreams!”

Finding work has not only changed Karyn’s life, it has also given hope to her family.

“My kids have seen a big change in my mood and attitude since I started work. My daughter has started a hospitality course to be ready for the next intake of crew and my 8 year-old grand-daughter dreams of a job on the Spirit too! My experience at Fitted for Work was a real turning point in my life. I will never forget what they did for me.”

Karyn offers her advice to other women going through what she’s endured.

“Never give up. Never think you are too old. Just have a go. Keep positive and keep your faith. No-one is going to make it happen for you. You have to be strong and have the courage to make changes in your life.”
