I hear some women in my network saying they would love to get fitter and healthier or have more energy – yet they do nothing about it. Saying it won’t make it happen. You need a plan so here are 5 tips to help you get started.

1. Decide what you want to achieve and WHY. Your why is the most important part as this will get you out of bed in morning when the alarm goes off or to put on your walking shoes.

2. Decide what you would like to do. If you have never run before I wouldn’t plan to do a 3-km run as you are setting yourself up for failure. Find something you enjoy doing that way you are likely to continue.

3. Start small and as your fitness and confidence grows, do more.

4. Be accountable. I go to the gym at 6.00 in the morning (why I say when the alarm goes off at 5.45?!?) and there is a group that also exercises at that time. If I miss a session, someone in the group sends a text checking up that I am OK or encourages me.

5. Reward yourself for taking action – not with chocolate. Set a few small rewards – such as going to the pictures with a friend, buying some new clothing – hopefully in a smaller size if that’s what you were hoping to achieve or whatever. Set a few milestones, e.g. every month or 3 months or whatever.

Do it NOW and enjoy the journey.
