“You are never too old  to set another goal or to dream a new dream.”
Les Brown

Robyn SmithHow relevant and true this saying is for me.  Having reached 55+ years I have started up a new business venture.  My business “Romesk” consults in one of the areas that I am very passionate about – aged care.  To start any business venture I believe you need to choose an area that you have a passion about, that will challenge and inspire you to keep on going even when your business may be going through lean times.  For me, it is about an opportunity to make a positive change in the way aged care is managed and ultimately the outcome hopefully will be reflected in improved outcomes for our elders.

Why did I feel the need to start up a new business and not become a “retiree”?  It was a very important question to ask myself when I was thinking about starting up this new business at my age.  My answer was that I still have this insatiable appetite to achieve, to make a difference in society and to use my knowledge and experience to influence change in aged care.  For me, working in my own business with my business partner is my dream.  I am my own boss and I have flexibility which allows me to take off time to attend my grandchildren’s events and visit my daughter overseas.

It certainly takes bravery to step out of your comfort zone.  I needed to believe in myself and my abilities to make a go of my own business.  I want to be an inspiration to my children, for them to know that anyone can achieve anything no matter their age or gender.  I am also studying for a Master of Arts which I hope to finish at the end of 2015.

I have worked since I was 16 years only taking time out to have my babies and to look after them in their early years.  So I speak with a certain amount of life and business experience.  I have learnt to balance my work life with my personal life, to look after my health and more importantly to find joy in my life.  Working in my own business at my age feels as though this has been what I have been working towards all my life.  “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream another new dream” – I am that person.
